Strasbourg is one loveliest city I have ever seen. This is a classic city of France, situated on the Franco-German border, lovely Strasbourg has been passed back and forward between the two countries for years. Because of it attractive view and city structure this city has been awarded as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I have come to know about this city from my colleagues at Switzerland.
My journey held on 21 December 2008. I have started my journey from Luzern. At first I went to Basel. And from there I took the train to Strasbourg. My train reached to Strasbourg at 10:00 am. The journey was so exciting. The train I made the journey was TGV. Which spend up around 300+ Km/hr.
This is the first time I am visiting France. So the excitement was little different. As I am alone traveling to a unknown country, I was little scare about what will happen. Basically the France and Swiss boarder is in the Basel train station. Three platform of the Basel SBB are part of France. A Big wooden door is the gate to France.
When I walk through the door there was no security checking for the passenger. Even in the train there is checking of train ticket only. As a Giant member EU, France is very liberal to the EU member country.
After arriving at Strasbourg, I was so exited. At first I went in to the Tourist information center at the train station. The people on the tourist center were so helpful. I took a City Map from them. And they locate me the important site at the Map.
When I come out from the station I was surprised to see the
view of station from out side. That was a great symbol of modern architecture. As that was a Christmas time, the whole city was so decorative. From the tourist center I have come to know that, the city have a old Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame) which is the main attraction of the city. Also the old “Petite France”, the France Quarter is one of the great attraction. Most importantly during the Christmas time the city have the biggest Christmas Market of the Europe. So I feel lucky to visit the city on that time.

From the map I have made a track to follow during my visit. And so I started my city tour. This city is very different then any city of Switzerland. There is a big canal surrounded the main city. And there are several bridge to connect both part of the city. The inner part of the canal is the old part of the city. And that was my main destination. After crossing the bridge just opposite to the train station I come to the old part of the city. Just beside the lake I saw a old building with a big clock on it. I keep working straight toward the cathedral. The city don’t have too busy traffic. The main city transport is modern tram. But to see the city it is best to walk around the city.
All the houses are very special. Although that was a winter time, still some
flower was decorating the window and balcony of each houses. After a 30 minutes of walk I arrived at the Cathedral. This is the first time I am seeing any Cathedral. We all knowledge of church, the
Cathedral is for bigger purpose. The structure of the cathedral was amazing. Every inch of the cathedral has a touch of art. Especially the main gate of the cathedral is most attractive. Just in middle of the gate there is a big sculpture of Mother marry and Jesus. Also there are some historic moment of Christian are shown on the main gate. As that was a Christmas time and also the holiday, there was lots of tourist on that day to visit the cathedral. Some people were begging outside the cathedral. All those beggars was decorated them self as different historic style.

Inside the cathedral was a very different experience for me. The prayer
hall is a giant one. There are hundreds of sculptures made the huge hall very exciting. There I have found a stage which located a higher place. From this stage the Bishop give his speech to the people. That stage was totally made by Gold. The design of that stage was superb. I
have passed a 30 minutes time inside that Cathedral. After that I started my walk around the city. Visitors can visit the top of the Cathedral. The cathedral is of height 142 Meter. and the visitor have go to the top by the steps only. I didn’t found it wise to climb up there, because I may get tired for the city tour. Out side the cathedral I have seen a “The Astronomical Clock” of mid-nineteenth-century.
Just outside the cathedral there is a Rohan Royal place. There are thre
e different museums inside that palace. But as I was there for 1 day only, I didn’t attempt got into the museum. I continued my walk around the city following the flow of the canal. Visitor can have a wonderful experience of a boat ride on the lake. This boat ride will make a round trip of the city. The boat is completely covered my transparent glass, so that everyone can have a good outside view and will not have any problem on cold weather.

After a hour long walk I reached at “Petite France”, the France Quarter. The building are outstanding in this colony. The beauty of those houses can’t be describe. All the building are a art work.
During my walk I have also visited “L'Ancienne Douane (Old Custom)”, “Covered-bridges”. At the 2:00 pm I walk back to the city center again.
There are lots of street activity and program I have found because of Christmas. Many
orchestra was performing their music. I have again went beck to the cathedral. This time I started go
ing top of the cathedral. I have climbed hundreds of steps to go to the top. The steps are twisted, and is it really difficult toclimb those steps. After a 15 minutes of climb I finally went to the top. From the top of the cathedral I have found a wonderful evening view of the city. I have enjoyed the sunset from the cathedral’s top. I stayed at top for 40 minutes and came down.

When I came down I found the city is highly decorated by lights. The view of the Christmas market was glorious that time. There are different kinds of shops on that market. I have made some shopping from there. At the night time all the buildings are decorated by different shades of light. Because of lighting the city become more colorful. I enjoyed the walk on that lighting.
